Emerging challenges of genomic data use
IJME COVER July-Sep 2026

As we cautiously navigate an uncertain future, new ethical challenges emerge. A research article in this issue deals with the rapid advances in the use of personal genetic data and asserts the need to legally protect individuals from privacy breach and discrimination. An editorial critiques the instrumentalisation of women in a knee-jerk policy push to raise falling fertility rates. Ethical preparedness to foresee and deal with new problems requires a strong regulatory system. A commentary and a report explain how monitoring at all levels of research, from ethics committees to global agencies, requires ethical reasoning and context.

Three commentaries and a poem warn that old problems, such as conversion therapy, adverse drug effects, corruption, and insidious tobacco marketing, continue to plague healthcare. Finally, two authors share with emotion and humour, in poetry and prose, their journeys in coping with cancer. All this, and more — with stimulating letters and reviews — in this July issue of the journal.
