Bio Sketches of the panelists

Dr ROOP GURSAHANI is currently a Consultant Neurologist and Epileptologist at the P.D. Hinduja National Hospital, Mumbai.

He passed his MBBS (1981) and MD (1984) from the Government Medical College, Nagpur; DM in Neurology in 1988 from GMC and JJ, Mumbai. He was Head of the Department of Neurology at Nair Hospital and T.N. Medical College from 1991 to 1994 and Honorary Assoc Prof in Neurology at Grant Medical College & Sir JJ Hospital 1998-2012. In addition to Clinical Neurology, his main interest is in Epilepsy and EEG. He is associated with the Epilepsy Clinic on the Lifeline Express. He is a founder trustee of FINE (Forum for Indian Neurology Education) which organizes teaching courses in Neurology. He is on the steering committee of ELICIT, the interdisciplinary task force of intensivists, palliative care physicians and neurologists for End of Life Care in India. Dr. Roop Gursahani is currently a Consultant Neurologist and Epileptologist at the P.D. Hinduja National Hospital, Mumbai.


SIBY K. GEORGE is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. Specializing in contemporary continental philosophy, he writes from a phenomenological vantage point on themes as varied as development, technology, pain and dying, political ethics, and subjectivity, focusing specifically on Indian/nonwestern contexts. He is author of Heidegger and Development in the Global South (Springer, 2015) and coeditor of Cultural Ontology of the Self in Pain (Springer, 2016). Dr SANJAY NAGRAL is a surgeon with specialisation in hepato-pancreatobiliary surgery and liver transplantation, who practices in Mumbai in both the public and private sectors. He is the coordinator of the department of surgical gastroenterology at Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai, and head of the department of general surgery at the KB Bhabha Municipal General Hospital, Mumbai. He is also involved in postgraduate training as a recognised teacher and guide for surgical gastroenterology and general surgery training programmes. He is the joint secretary of the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee based in Mumbai, which regulates cadaveric transplant activity in Mumbai, and the chairperson of its liver committee. He has over 100 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals to his credit.

Dr Nagral is publisher of IJME and a member of its editorial board. He is involved with the Jan Swasthya Abhiyan, the Indian circle of theworldwide People Health Movement. He has contributed articles on health and medical ethics to various publications including the Times of India, Hindustan Times, Mumbai Mirror, Economic & Political Weekly, Rediff, National Medical Journal of India, BMJ and IJME.


Rev. Dr. STEPHEN FERNANDES is Professor of Ethics and Moral Theology at St. Pius College, Goregaon, Mumbai from the year 2000 onwards till date. He completed his Bachelors of Commerce, Masters of Commerce and Bachelor of Education from the University of Bombay. He also completed his Licentiate (1996) and Doctorate (2000) in Ethics and Moral Theology from the Accademia Alfonsiana in Roma, Italy. He is the National Ecclesiastical Advisor of the Catholic Nurses Guild of India from October 2013 onwards. He is also the Executive Secretary of the Office of Justice, Peace and Development of the CBCI from October 2015. He is the Ethical Consultant of the Ethics Committee of the Holy Family Hospital, Bandra, Mumbai. He is the Executive Director of the F.I.A.M.C. Biomedical Ethics Centre India. He is the Co-Convenor of a nine month course in Medical Ethics covering important life issues. He is a member of the University Research Evaluation Committee (UREC), D.Y. Patil University, Navi Mumbai (November 2014 onwards). He has published various articles on Ethical Issues concerning Justice and Peace and Healthcare. In 2006, he received the John XXI International Award in Medical Deontology for his research paper on HIV/AIDS at the FIAMC World Conference in Barcelona, Spain. In 2008, he received the Justice and Peace Medallion from the Pontifical Council of Justice and Peace, Vatican City in recognition of outstanding contribution to promotion of Justice and Peace in society. In 2009, he received the Bombay Catholic Sabha Felicitation Award for outstanding service to society from His Excellency, Shri S.C. Jamir, Governor of Maharashtra. He has presented many Research Papers on Social Ethics, Medical Ethics and issues of Justice and Peace at various National and International conferences. Over the last few years, he has organized in Mumbai a number of National Symposia on the Medical Ethics and Life Issues.


Adv. VEENA JOHARI works as Lawyer at Courtyard Attorneys. She does some amount of public interest work, research work, filing of oppositions against patents for pharmaceuticals, given comments on law and policy relating to clinical trials, compensation, surrogacy, drugs and cosmetics act, etc. She is also a member of the Ethics Committee at KEM hospital.

Earlier at the Lawyers Collective, she provided probono legal services to vulnerable populations, and was a part of the team that formulated the draft law on HIV.


Sunita VS Bandewar (PhD - Anthro; MHSc-Bioethics)

Sunita Bandewar has training in Anthropology and Bioethics. She was with CEHAT – Centre for Enquiry into Health and Allied Themes, Anusandhan Trust for 15 years. She was awarded an International Fellowship by the International Fogarty Centre, NIH, USA to pursue Masters in Health Sciences (Bioethics) at the Joint Centre for Bioethics, University of Toronto, Canada in 2003-04. Her engagement with health as a field of enquiry over these past 20 years is primarily via empirical research and advocacy in the areas of, broadly speaking, women and health, global health, and bioethics. She was a senior research fellow in bioethics and global health at the University of Toronto on the initiative titled 'Ethical, Social, Cultural Program in Global Health', Canada for five years. Through this Program, she had extensive opportunities to work in the African continent and engage with newer ethical challenges in global health. She has published a number of papers in peer reviewed journals. Amongst others, she serves on the International Ethics Review Board, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), Geneva; on the Managing Committee, Forum for Medical Ethics Society, Mumbai, the publisher of the IJME; and on the Board of Trustees of Sama Resource Group for Women and Health, New Delhi. Her primary engagement is her association with the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics, Mumbai in the capacity of one of the working editors and is deeply involved in editorial work as well as organizational matters. Currently, she works independently as a senior research professional, a consultant and a trainer in the areas of bioethics, global health, research methodology, program evaluation and policy analysis.
